South Dakota

South Dakota is a Northern Plains state of about 924,000 residents, split by the Missouri River between the farm country of the east and the ranching, mining and tourism economy of the Black Hills in the west. It levies no personal income tax and no corporate income tax, a policy that turned Sioux Falls into a national credit-card and trust banking hub after 1981. Agriculture remains foundational — corn, soybeans, cattle, hogs and the country's largest bison herds — while Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally draw more than 14 million visitors a year. Nine federally recognised Native American tribes hold reservation lands covering a large share of the state, and South Dakota consistently records one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States.
